Hi! I'm Shawanda, blogger behind
– a food and lifestyle blog.
On my blog, I love developing refreshing and delicious cocktails that are easy but elegant. Today, I'm excited to share a Tennessee themed cocktail with you! Funny story: I'm not actually from Tennessee. The first 18 years of my life, I lived in Virginia; for college I resided in the Washington D.C. area then I moved down south to Atlanta. I know what you're thinking – Atlanta isn't in Tennessee. Here's my love story with Tennessee. After 7 years of living in Atlanta, the boy and I (there's always a boy) decided that I would make a move to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Three years later, I'm still here and the boy and I are now husband and wife.
So, I may not be from Tennessee but a Tennessee cocktail, I know.
The first liquor that I think of when thinking of Tennessee is naturally, whiskey. When brainstorming this cocktail, I thought of using our state fruit but when I discovered that it was a tomato, I quickly moved on. Also, I strongly dislike tomatoes.
Today I'm super-amped to present you the Tennessee Smash. It's smooth, a little sweet and a little spicy, just like our state.
1.5 oz Whiskey (Tennessee whiskey is fantastic but your favorite brand of whiskey will do)
1/2 oz spicy honey syrup (recipe below)
1-2 oz grapefruit juice (fresh or store bought will be fine)
In a cocktail shaker, add whiskey, syrup and grapefruit juice. Top with ice then shake, shake, shake until the shaker is nice and frosty, about 30 seconds.
Pour into a glass and garnish with a slice of grapefruit.
Spicy Honey Syrup:
Equal parts sugar and water (for this recipe, I did 1/4 cup of each)
4 round slices of jalapeno pepper
Bring all ingredients to a simmer and stir until the sugar dissolves.
Remove from heat and allow the peppers to continue steeping for 10-15 minutes. Taste to see if the desired temperature of heat is met.
Allow the syrup to cool before adding it a drink. This syrup can be used in other cocktails or even tea if you want!
