The Black Eyed Susan
Hi everyone! My name is Lauren and I'm the blogger behind
. My blog is all about the meals, desserts, and cocktails that I make for husband, my friends, family, and myself.
When I was asked to whip up a cocktail that represents the state of Maryland, my immediate thought was to make something using the seasoning mix Old Bay. After some internal debate and coming to my senses (What, people from other states don't go nuts for Old Bay??), I settled on The Black Eyed Susan.
The Black Eyed Susan is the official drink of The Preakness Stakes, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown. The Preakness is held right here, in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Black Eyed Susan is sweet, fruity, and is one of those drinks that you feel like you can sip on all afternoon before standing up and realizing that "oh crap, I'm hammered".
Recipe (makes 2 cocktails)
3/4 cup orange juice
1/2 cup pineapple juice
3 tbs vodka
3 tbs light rum
2 tbs orange liqueur
orange slice and cherry, for garnish
Add ice to a cocktail shaker, along with the orange juice, pineapple juice, vodka, rum, and orange liqueur. Shake vigorously until chilled. Strain into two Collins glasses filled with ice. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.
Even though the Preakness Stakes have come and gone, this is a perfect summertime cocktail.
